The Best Gin in Mississippi
When you think of Mississippi, the first thing to come to mind probably isn’t gin. It’s probably thick southern accents, fried catfish, or the large river running through the country…. but what you should think about is Wonderbird Spirits.
Wonderbird Spirits is located in Taylor, Mississippi, right outside of Oxford. They are north Mississippi’s first distillery and one of the few gin distilleries in the state. That is not the only thing that makes them unique. They are one of few in the world that make gin with rice. It is a Japanese technique traditionally used to make sake. The rice used in their gin is also from Mississippi! They ferment rice straight from the delta. The add local foraged ingredients for their unique, southern flavors from pine needles to fresh magnolia blossoms.
I had the wonderful experience of visiting the distillery and getting to meet everyone there. Being a former bartender, I already knew of the gin and was a big fan. I love how fresh it smells and beautifully it pairs with fresh fruit.
Before getting a tour of the beautiful facilities, we sat at the bar and tasted the gin. I am usually more of a fan of a mixed drink that straight up, but the gin was so good all on its own. After that, we made a cocktail and it was needed in the hot Mississippi summer.
If I lived near Oxford, this place would be a frequent spot for me. Their facility is so lovely and beautifully curated. 5 stars for sure!
