Red Bluff Hike - Foxworth, MS
Just an hour and a half outside of Jackson, Red Bluff in Foxworth is Mississippi’s own Grand Canyon. The canyon was created from erosion from the Pearl river. The erosion is continuous, so the road above slowly dissolves into the canyon.
When you arrive, you can park right next to the drop-off. You can either continue down a path to the bottom or walk along the drop off/ old road. We chose to go down. It is a pretty strenuous hike for Mississippi. There are easier sides and more difficult sides. When you get to the bottom, you reach a train track. From there you can go straight through a creek to the Pearl river, turn back around to go down through the creek to the valley of the canyon, or walk down the old train tracks.
We chose to go down to the river then back up the creek to the valley. I recommend wearing waterproof shoes or hiking boots. My sneakers were soaked and covered in mud.
Overall we hiked about two miles. Coming back up was the hardest part. I recommend going while it’s still cold out. The mosquitos are bound to be all over the place in the summer and snakes will most definitely come out in the heat. We went early afternoon and left right before sunset and it was the perfect time to go.
It has been the best MS hike i’ve done so far; however, there were a lot of people there who were pretty noisy. You can also camp there but try a time that you might have some privacy.
10/10
Remember:
waterproof shoes
go before it gets hot - no mosquitos & no snakes
will likely be packed
