Trying a new hobby: calligraphy

I live for a creative activity. As someone who has a degree in art and works in a creative industry, I am always looking for new ways to express myself or just find an outlet. A friend of mine is a professional calligrapher and does wedding calligraphy. I have always wanted to learn and with my wedding coming up, it felt like the perfect time. When she asked me if we could trade a lesson for a photoshoot, it was an easy answer.

In our lesson, we covered the basic: how to hold the pen, what direction the nib should be facing, how to fill the ink, how to apply pressure in certain points, and more. She had sheets ready for me to practice all the movements and once we finished those we moved to lower case letters. We didn’t have time to go through all of the upper case letters, but at the end of the lesson she taught me how to write my name.

She sent me home with more practice sheets, two nibs, and some ink!

I have been trying to practice for at least ten minutes a day since then and I can already see progress.

Hopefully, this journey continues and my calligraphy will be an integral part of my creative journey.
