Underwater Photography

Part 1:

I recently bought an underwater housing for my camera. It was cheap and from amazon, so I most definitely did not have high hopes for it. I figured I would be incredibly lucky if it would work at all, but I was pleasantly surprised.

While underwater, it is hard to use the controls so I kept it on auto. I couldn’t zoom or adjust the focus. It was basically blind shooting. I had to change my view to looking at the screen to see what I was doing, but it was still very hard to get a picture. The camera had a hard time automatically focusing; however, the fuzziness and out of focus look kind of works for some on these photos.

It was definitely a trial and error situation and was one of the most difficult shoots that I have done, but I am pleased with the outcome. These photos were taken with the intention of being cyanotype prints, which will be blue. I think they work really well in black and white but am excited to see them as blue.

Part 2:

These are the color versions of my previous post. I love them in black and white but I think the color makes them pretty great too.

I tried to edit them so that the colors were still visible but muted. I wanted there to be a slight blue but I didn’t want that color to overwhelm the image. The dress is originally pink but i also desaturated the reds so it would appear more white. I wanted my edits to be very whimsical and dreamlike so I added grain and haze. I also kept the shadows very lifted, avoiding any stark contrast.
